About me

Who is Matthijs Erkens?

My full name is Matthijs Lucas Erkens, I am 20 years old and I live in Schiedam. Ever since I was a child, I have been absolutely mad about cars and anything with wheels. At an early age I discovered my creativity and passion for vehicles and the technic behind it. By then i already knew that i wanted to work in that industry.

That is why, at secondary school, I chose subjects as mathematics for scientific studies, physics and chemistry, with Research and Development and computer science as my optional subjects.  In the R&D course, I worked on various projects that we had to find ourselves, including one for the Department for Transport, Public Works and Water Management.  During the R&D Course, I carried out various projects which we had to organise ourselves by approaching companies directly. During this module, I undertook assignments for large organisations such as the gouvernment, and learnt a great deal in the process, including how to work as part of a team and the mindset and approach required to achieve effective results. I eventually obtained my pre-university education Certificate in six years.

The reason I chose the Bachelor's Degree study in Automotive Engineering at the Rotterdam University of Applied Science is that I’m able to put the theory into practice effectively. Throughout the academic year, we’ve alternated between theory and practical work. Last year, we had to design and build a fire fighting car for the narrow streets of Amsterdam for Kenbri Firefighting. This year we’re working on building a eco-marathon vehicle, with the aim of producing the most fuel-efficient vehicle possible.

I have also been working at Domino’s Pizza for almost four years now, the last two of which as a shift manager, where I manage the team and prepare them for the busiest periods, ensuring that everything runs as smoothly as possible. I work an average of 80 to 100 hours a month alongside my full-time studies, which shows that I am a hard worker and can strike a good balance between school and work.
